The Assembly module works for build to stock or build to order but actually works better if the product needs to be configured for a specific requirement. Users in the sales order module can bring up the assembly BOM for a SKU and change the requirements on the fly. The companies which assemble items before selling the finished product uses assembly Orders in MSD365 Business Central. The assembly orders are created to track the start and end date of the orders along with the alignment of resources and raw materials for each order. Once the assembly is created the finish good item is available to be sold.
Items
The assembly items on the item master are the ones that are created after the assembly of raw materials. The BOM is created for those items on the item master. The BOM is activated before the creation of assembly orders start. The raw materials are added to the assembly BOM item along with the quantity required of each to assemble the final product.
The assembly items can be assembled to stock, typically used for items that are kept in warehouses before the sales order is created. These are commonly non-customized items.
On the other hand, assembly items that are assemble to order are created against the sales orders. When the sales order is created in MSD365 BC, it results in automatic creation of assembly items for assemble-to-order.
Resources
When creating a BOM for the assembly item, the resources are added along with the raw materials. The resources can be labor or machine. These resources are required to assemble the item. The resources time and cost are defined for the purpose of calculating cost for each assembly order.
